Hepatitis A & B Vaccine (Twinrix)

Twinrix is a combined vaccine providing protection against both hepatitis A and hepatitis B.

The standard course is 3 doses, normally given at the first appointment, 1 month later and then 6 months after the first dose

es. If you are an adult and do not have enough time to complete the standard course before travel, Twinrix Adult can be given on an accelerated schedule at day 0, day 7 and day 21. A further dose is then recommended approximately 12 months after the first dose.

The main difference is that the standard schedule requires 3 doses in total, whereas the accelerated schedule requires 4 doses in total.

Twinrix Paediatric is licensed from 1 year up to and including 15 years of age. From age 16, Twinrix Adult is used.

Usually not. Previous vaccination history, previous hepatitis infection and individual risk factors will be reviewed before vaccination. In some circumstances blood testing may be appropriate.

The most common effects are temporary discomfort, redness or swelling at the injection site. Headache, tiredness or feeling generally unwell can also occur. Serious allergic reactions are very rare.

After a complete standard 3-dose course, routine booster doses are not generally required for most healthy people. If you have the accelerated schedule, the first three doses are given at day 0, day 7 and day 21, and a fourth dose is required approximately 12 months after the first dose to complete the course. Different recommendations may apply to people with certain medical conditions or ongoing occupational or other exposure risks.
