Preparing your healthcare experience...
HPV is a very common virus, spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity. Most infections cause no symptoms and clear naturally, but some strains can cause cervical cancer, other genital cancers, throat cancers, and genital warts.
Yes - it is offered to children in school as part of the NHS programme, and also to some adults: eligibility can be checked here: https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/hpv-vaccine/.
We do not provide NHS-funded vaccines, but you are welcome to book with us if you would like to be vaccinated privately.
The HPV vaccine is routinely recommended up to age 25, as it is most effective before exposure to the virus. However, in some circumstances it may still be beneficial for older adults, and can be offered privately.
The number of doses depends on your age and circumstances, and can range from 1 to 3 doses. If you are unsure what is best for you, we recommend booking a GP appointment to discuss your individual situation before starting the course.
Current evidence shows the vaccine offers long-lasting protection, with no evidence yet of protection wearing off.
Most people tolerate the vaccine well. The most common side effects are soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.
