What does the meningitis ACWY vaccine protect me from?
It protects against four types of meningococcal bacteria (groups A, C, W, and Y), which can cause meningitis (inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord) and septicaemia (blood poisoning).
Is the meningitis ACWY vaccine available on the NHS?
The NHS offers it to certain groups, such as teenagers, young adults, and people at higher risk.

For travel purposes, most people will need to purchase it privately.
How long does protection last?
It's generally considered that proteciton lasts about 5 years.
How many doses are needed?
A single dose provides protection.
Who should have the vaccine?
It is recommended for travellers to countries where these infections are more common, including parts of Africa and for those undertaking the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia.
Students and young adults are also be recommended to have it.
Can a certificate be provided?
Yes. For certain destinations such as Saudi Arabia (for Hajj/Umrah), a valid vaccination certificate is required, and we can provide this for an additional £10 fee.
Are there any side effects I should be aware of?
Most people tolerate the vaccine well. The most common side effects are soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.
