Protection is long-lasting, though it may not cover all pneumococcal strains. Some high-risk individuals may need additional protection later in life.
Most people tolerate the vaccine well. The most common side effects are soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.
It protects against 20 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae, the bacteria responsible for serious infections such as pneumonia, meningitis, sepsis, and ear infections.
