Preparing your healthcare experience...
Yes - the NHS offers the shingles vaccine free to some groups, but not to everyone. You can check if you are eligible here: https://www.nhs.uk/vaccinations/shingles-vaccine/
If you are not eligible through the NHS, adults over 50 can still choose to have the vaccine privately at our clinic.
Shingles is caused by reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. It leads to a painful, blistering rash that can sometimes result in long-term nerve pain (post-herpetic neuralgia).
Studies suggest strong protection for at least 10 years, with lasting benefit against both shingles and post-herpetic neuralgia.
It is given as a two-dose course, with the second dose usually 2–6 months after the first.
The vaccine is licensed for adults aged 50 and over.
Most people tolerate the vaccine well. The most common side effects are soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.
