This blood test measures IgG antibodies against the varicella-zoster virus, which causes chickenpox and shingles. A positive result usually indicates evidence of immunity from previous chickenpox infection or vaccination. It is commonly requested by healthcare workers, occupational health departments, employers, universities and people who are unsure whether they have previously had chickenpox. A negative or equivocal result may mean that immunity has not been demonstrated and vaccination may be recommended depending on your circumstances. This test is intended to assess immunity and is not the appropriate test for diagnosing a current chickenpox or shingles infection.

Attend your appointment and one of our experienced nurses or phlebotomists will collect your blood sample. If your test also includes another sample, such as urine or stool, we will provide the necessary collection kit and clear instructions.
Results are typically available within 1–2 working days. Some individual markers may take longer if they require specialist laboratory processing. We will normally wait until the full profile is complete before issuing your reviewed results.
