This assessment provides baseline blood tests following a needlestick injury or other occupational exposure to blood or body fluids. It includes a fourth-generation HIV-1 & HIV-2 Antigen/Antibody test together with Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (Anti-HBs), Hepatitis B Core Total Antibody (Anti-HBc) and Hepatitis C Antibody. The inclusion of Anti-HBs and Anti-HBc helps determine whether you already have immunity through vaccination or previous natural infection, providing valuable information when assessing the need for post-exposure management. These results, alongside serum being saved for 2 years, provides documented baseline evidence for occupational health follow-up. If your exposure has occurred very recently, some infections may not yet be detectable because of recognised laboratory window periods. Our GPs will advise if repeat testing is recommended. Follow-up blood tests are often required after recognised window periods. Our Needlestick Follow-up Screen has been designed specifically for this purpose.

Attend your appointment and one of our experienced nurses or phlebotomists will collect your blood sample. If your test also includes another sample, such as urine or stool, we will provide the necessary collection kit and clear instructions.
Results are typically available within 2 working days. Some individual markers may take longer if they require specialist laboratory processing. We will normally wait until the full profile is complete before issuing your reviewed results.
