Why Book with us?
Chikungunya is a viral infection spread by mosquitoes, mainly in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. It typically causes fever and severe joint pain, and while most people recover, symptoms can sometimes persist for months.
As a non-live vaccine, it is suitable for most people, including those with weakened immune systems. However, it may not be recommended for individuals with severe allergies to vaccine ingredients. If unsure, please speak to your GP or our travel nurse before booking.
At our clinic we use Vimkunya®, a non-live vaccine. It is given as a single dose, suitable for adults and children aged 12 years and over.
Current evidence suggests protection is long-lasting after a single dose, but because this is a newer vaccine, guidance may be updated as more data becomes available.
It can be recommended for travellers spending time in areas where outbreaks occur, particularly if staying in rural regions, travelling during outbreak periods, or at higher risk of mosquito exposure.
If you think you may need this vaccine, we strongly recommend consulting a travel nurse first - you can book an appointment with our travel nurse here .
Most people tolerate the vaccine well. The most common side effects are soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.
