Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR)

A full 2-dose course of the MMR vaccine provides long-lasting, usually lifelong, protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. No routine boosters are recommended once both doses have been given.

The MMR vaccine is not suitable for people with severe allergies to any of its ingredients, those who are severely immunocompromised, or women who are pregnant. If you are unsure, please speak to your GP or one of our doctors before booking.

The MMR vaccine protects against three serious viral illnesses: measles, mumps, and rubella (German measles). These infections can cause complications such as pneumonia, meningitis, infertility, or problems in pregnancy. Two doses of the vaccine give long-lasting, usually lifelong, protection

The MMR course is two doses, usually given in childhood, but if missed they can be given at any age, at least one month apart.

MMR is available on the NHS as part of the national immunisation programme.

Most people have no problems after the MMR vaccine. Some may get mild side effects such as soreness at the injection site, a mild fever, or a rash. These usually settle within a few days. More serious side effects are very rare.

• Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy within 1 month
• People with a weakened immune system due to illness, treatment, or medication
• Anyone with a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose or to vaccine ingredients (such as neomycin or gelatine)
• People with a high fever or acute illness at the time of vaccination (it may be postponed)

Yes - it is part of the routine NHS childhood schedule. Adults who missed out may also be able to request it via the NHS, but it is available privately too, especially if needed for travel or employment.

• Children (routinely given by the NHS as part of the UK childhood immunisaiton programme)
• Adults who have not had two doses in the past
• Those who are uncertain of their vaccination history, particularly before travel to areas where measles is common
