One dose is usually enough to provide protection. Booster doses are advised every 3 years if you remain at risk.
Typhoid fever is a serious bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. It spreads through contaminated food or water and is more common in areas with poor sanitation, particularly parts of Asia, Africa, and South America.
Symptoms include high fever, headache, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhoea, and without treatment it can lead to serious complications. Vaccination and careful food and water hygiene are the best ways to protect yourself when travelling to at-risk areas.
The vaccine is recommended for travellers to areas where typhoid is common, especially if you are staying with local families, travelling to smaller towns or rural areas, or where access to safe food and water may be limited.
If you are uncertain whether you need the vaccine, we recommend seeking travel health advice from a qualified travel nurse. You can seek advice from our travel nurse here .
Most people tolerate the vaccine well. The most common side effects are soreness at the injection site, mild fever, or headache. These usually settle within a day or two. Serious side effects are very rare.
